Dichromatism occurs when one cone is missing. If the red cones are absent, the result is protanopia, deuteranopia is when the green cones are absent and tritanopia is when the blue cones are absent. Milder forms of the disease where the cones are present but impaired in their function are called protanomaly and deuteranomaly.


Protanopia affects one in 100 men. They have trouble distinguishing between red, orange and yellow, red and may even be mistaken for black. Blue, purple, lavender and purple can all appear as shades of blue. In the mild form of protanomaly, red, orange and yellow can be considered as tending to the green.


Deuteranopia can affect five of the 100 men. In deuteranomaly, the green cones are small and green, yellow, red and orange are considered shades of red. This is the most common form of color blindness. In the most severe form of Deuteranopia, red, yellow, orange and green seem more or less the same hue.


This is the least common form of color blindness and can affect women and men, as it is not carried on the X chromosome, they have difficulty with shades of blue, which can be considered as tending to the green.
