Diabetes is today regarded as an inevitably progressive disease with inevitable destruction of pancreatic beta cells, the very ones that synthesize insulin needed to control blood sugar levels in the blood. Yet a stomach surgery (bariatric surgery) performed in obese patients, has demonstrated its ability to eliminate diabetes by limiting nutrient intake drastically. British scientists have hypothesized that patients would bear a reduced food intake with intakes below the needs, could correct diabetes by normalizing the beta cell function and insulin sensitivity. The scientists then recruited volunteers aged diabetic patients 35 to 65 years with diabetes for less than 4 years, with an HbA1c between 6.5% and 9%, a BMI of 33 (obese). Their antidiabetic treatments were gradually abolished and dietary restriction was put in place under strict medical supervision, as such reducing energy intake remains dangerous.

The authorized feed consisted of a liquid diet providing 510 kcal per day (46.4% carbohydrate, 32.5% protein and 20.1% fat + vitamins, minerals), supplemented by vegetables to an overall energy intake of 600 kcal / day. Patients were encouraged to drink 2 liters of water daily. Bioassays and ratings LIMC, fat mass, and weight were made. Dietary restriction lasted 8 weeks.

After 1 week, the fasting blood glucose from 9.2 mmol / l to 5.9 mmmol, comparable to that of people without diabetes and that while all treatment had been suspended. It remained stable throughout the treatment.

The glycated hemoglobin was it reduced from 7.4% to 6.0%, also returning to the level of those without diabetes.

For the authors, the demonstration is made that the insufficiency of pancreatic beta cells and insulin resistance, both of which are the progression of diabetes can be reversed by a strict low-calorie diet.

The authors acknowledge that this is a small study of patients whose duration of diabetes was low (4 years). Other studies must obviously be conducted to get an idea about the long-term efficacy of this procedure that opens new therapeutic perspectives. This is obviously not a technique to practice oneself outside medical control.
